Leelanau Historical Society hosts Wrecks and Rescues of the Manitou Passage

Historical Feature, Upcoming Event

From staff reports

Join the Leelanau Historical Society for its next program, Wrecks and Rescues of the Manitou Passage, on Wednesday, July 18, at 4 p.m. The Leelanau Historical Society is located at 203 E. Cedar Street in Leland.

Curator of collections Kim Kelderhouse will share firsthand accounts of some of the shipwrecks of the Manitou Passage. Kim’s engaging program includes photos, videos, poetry, and narratives detailing the harrowing experiences of survivors and witnesses. The program gives a powerful flavor of what life was like when maritime travel was the primary means to access northern Michigan and satisfies the curiosity of those intrigued by the mysterious shipwrecks resting at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Kelderhouse will also share anecdotes and photos from her personal experiences on North and South Manitou Island.
