Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office holds boater safety class

The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office will hold a boater safety class on Saturday, June 23 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. for all boaters who will be at least 12 years old by the end of the boating season. The class will be held at the Leelanau County Court House at E. Government Center Drive off M-204 between Lake Leelanau and Suttons Bay.

Registration will start promptly at 8 a.m. and class will begin immediately after. There is no charge for the course, and the only requirement is that participants come with a positive attitude and a desire to be a safe boater. Adults are also welcome. Bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. Course materials will be provided at no cost.

Those born on or after July 1, 1996, may operate a boat legally only if they have been issued a boater safety certificate and if it on board the boat they are operating. Only those persons born on or before December 31, 1978, may operate a personal watercraft legally without restrictions. All others must obtain and carry a boater safety certificate.
