League of Women Voters Leelanau County to discuss Michigan Supreme Court

Upcoming Event

Justice Marilyn Kelly (Wayne Photo)-1From staff reports

The League of Women Voters Leelanau County (LWVLC) will host retired Michigan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly at the Old Art Building in Leland on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Her presentation topic is “Improvements Needed in Michigan Courts”. The event is a fundraiser for the newly independent League of Women Voters Leelanau County. The suggested donation is $10. Refreshments will be served.

Justice Kelly will highlight the 2012 findings of the Michigan Judicial Selection Task Force. Justice Kelly notes “Government should be conducted in the daylight. So many are in favor, but amazingly we still have problems, even though some of the solutions are so simple. ”

Justice Kelly retired from the Michigan Supreme Court at the end of 2012. She served from 1996 and was the Chief Judge from 2009-2011. Before being elected to the Supreme Court, she served 8 years on the Michigan Court of Appeals and before her career on the bench was a courtroom attorney for 17 years. Her previous public service included 12 years as an elected member of the Michigan Board of Education. In 2010 she commissioned the Michigan Judicial Selection Task Force. The Task Force report described itself, its mission and its accomplishment as “being composed of conservatives, liberals and independents; lawyers and non-lawyers; business people and experienced campaigners. The members examined other states’ models of judicial selection through the research and direct testimony of leading scholars and practitioners on all sides of the issue. The Task Force developed common-sense, practical solutions that can easily make judicial selection in this state more democratic and more effective.” The Task Force received in-kind assistance the League of Women Voters of Michigan and others. Its report may be found here.

The public is invited. For more information: Call (231) 386-5106, visit LWVLeelanau.org or follow LWVLC on Facebook at League of Women Voters Leelanau County.
