From staff reports
The Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will host the following programs this month:
Aug. 20, Eagles with Dr. Carl Palazzolo
The Glen Lake Library will host wildlife veterinarian Dr. Carl Palazzolo on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 pm. Dr. Palazzolo will discuss his new book The Comeback of our National Symbol in Michigan. He’ll share his stunning photographs of bald eagles, and discuss their biology, along with the unique challenges in providing their medical care. Proceeds of book sales will support eagle rehabilitation efforts. Dr. Palazzolo will be joined by Francie Krawcke of Michigan Avian Experience, and a special guest, a magnificent rehabilitated eagle.
Aug. 22, Children’s author Gretchen Rose
Local author Gretchen Rose will present her two newly-published children’s book at the Glen Lake Library on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 3 pm. She’ll read from The Jingu Magical Garden and Dune Dragons and the Fairies of the Lake. Both are middle-grade fantasy stories, inspired by nature, friendship and the resilience of the human heart. Copies of the books will be available to purchase courtesy of the Cottage Book Shop. For more information about the author, visit GretchenRoseAuthor.com.
The Jingu Magical Garden follows Eizo and Miyoshi Jingu and their eight children, who, from the 1920s to 1942, lived in and operated the concession of the San Antonio Japanese Garden. The youngest daughter, Lillian, and her baby brother, Kimi, are the main protagonists and when they discover a strange egg on the bank of the koi pond, they keep it warm in hopes that it will hatch into a puppy. But when a baby dragon emerges, it is love at first sight for the Jingu siblings. They name him Kokoro and the three have many adventures. But when in 1941, Japan bombs Pearl Harbor, their lives take a dramatic turn, and they are evicted from their beloved garden. The book continues through their struggles to survive, readjust to their reduced circumstances, and ultimately thrive.
Dune Dragons and the Fairies of the Lake, the second book in the Dune Dragons series, continues the adventures of Alitta, the plucky Anishinaabe girl, the dragon protagonists, Chryllis and Jilly, and their woodland pals. When Zuzu—now an irrepressible teenager— competes in a cherry-pit-spitting contest, she breathes fire breath and expels a molten pit. Only later does she realize that the fiery projectile pierced a fairy’s wing. This unfortunate event sets the Dras and company on one of the most fantastic voyages of all time—a journey that takes them from Lake Michigan’s magnificent Sleeping Bear Dunes to the fabled mound city of Cahokia on the Midwestern plains to the heart of the tropics.
