Glen Lake Film Fest celebrates books to movies

From staff reports

The Glen Lake Film Festival continues Monday nights at 8 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Township Hall until Aug. 6. Next up is The Great Gatsby on July 30: a 1974 romantic drama based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, directed by Jack Clayton and produced by David Merrick from a screenplay by Francis Ford Coppola. The film stars Robert Redford along with Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Bruce Dern, Karen Black, Scott Wilson and Lois Chiles. The film follows the life and times of millionaire Jay Gatsby at the height of the Roaring Twenties, as recounted by his friend neighbor Nick Carraway.

“It’s a partnership with the Glen Lake Library, Lake Street Galleries and the Cottage Book Shop,” said book shop owner Sue Boucher. “When looking for a theme we came up with books-to-movies, which has worked well. Our best response has been with classic movies. I just looked for great movies that were great classic books. The books are available at the book store and the library.”

On Aug. 6 is The Third Man: a 1949 British film noir directed by Carol Reed and written by Graham Greene, starring Joseph Cotton-Valli, Orson Welles, and Trevor Howard. The film takes place in post-World War II Vienna. It centers on Holly Martins, an American given a job in Vienna by his friend Harry Lime. When Holly arrives in Vienna he gets the news that Lime is dead. Martins meets with Lime’s acquaintances in an attempt to investigate what he considers a suspicious death.
