Glen Arbor Art Association unveils gallery shows

Children’s Art Show, May 9-17, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Works created by the Glen Arbor Art Association’s After School Art & Dinner students during the 2010-2011 school year. Once a month a group of about eight students ride the school bus to the GAAA, where they have an art class taught be an instructor. The childrens’ parents and other family members arrive later to view the finished art work and to enjoy a dinner prepared by GAAA volunteers. The spring art show is the culmination of the year’s projects.

Harriett Mittelberger, Paintings (Mini-show) May 16-27, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Harriett Mittelberger earned a B.A. in Communications (Theatre) from Michigan State University and an M.F.A. in Directing from The George Washington University. She taught English and Theatre in Montgomery County, Maryland, for 32 years. After receiving her certification in art from the University of Maryland in 1999, she taught high school courses in fundamentals of art and ceramics. Her interest in pursuing art was fueled by doing set designs for her plays and others. Harriett has studied watercolors with Suzanne Wilson, Stefanie Vallee, and Tony Couch, and oil painting with Peggy Hawley and Douglas David. Her work has been shown at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va., Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, the Glen Arbor Art Association, and the Crystal Lake Art Center.

Jo Anne Wilson, Postcards from Provence (Mini-show) May 31-June 10, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Jo Anne Wilson is a retired teacher of French, a watercolor artist and freelance writer. She divides her time between the Grand Traverse/Leelanau County area of Northern Michigan and her favorite villages in Southern France. www.meetmeinprovence.com

Jane Batteiger, Paintings (Mini-show) June 13-24, Monday-Friday, 9-1
Jane Batteiger is a year round resident of Leelanau County. She has spent many years involved in art education and landscape painting. The opportunity to live and paint in Leelanau County has developed a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and change of seasons that the area provides. Jane feels privileged to live in an area where man’s footprint has blended naturally into the mosaic of lakes, beaches, dunes, and forests. As an artist, the continuing shift of this

Lynn Uhlmann, Paintings (Full Gallery Show) July 22-24/Reception, Friday, 6-9 p.m./Gallery Open, Sat. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. & Sun., noon-6 p.m.
Lynn Uhlmann’s education includes a BFA and MFA. Over the past 40 years, she has participated in numerous national exhibitions of work in ceramics, painting, and photography. She has 23 years of teaching experience, including Colorado Mountain College and was an Adjunct Professor at Shippensburg University in PA. For the past several years she has worked fulltime in her home studio. She has vacationed in the Glen Arbor area for the past 29 years. The uniquely diverse landscape of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offers countless locations that inspire her work. Her paintings give a familiar tranquil feeling of the viewers own meaningful experiences in the outdoors. She will exhibit paintings that focus on the wooded landscapes surrounding the lakes in Leelanau County. Mary Beth Day, Paintings

Mary Beth Day’s paintings show horizontal sunlight, dewy atmosphere, unusual colors of nature, wispy and distinct cloud formations and architectural angles. She is especially interested in recording the elements of time’s impacts on barns. Mary Beth is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University. Her work has employed a variety of visual media in addition to acrylics, including encaustic, pastel, photography, pen and ink, and graphic design. Celeste Crouch, Paintings (Full Gallery Show)

Celeste Crouch finds inspiration for her watercolor paintings in the glorious vistas and beautiful landscapes in evidence throughout Leelanau County. She loves the flowing quality watercolor affords and strives for a fresh look and glowing whites in her paintings. During the warmer months, she enjoys going outside and painting “en plein air”. Celeste has studied watercolor painting with many nationally known and recognized watercolor artists including Ron Ransom, Alex Powers, Betty Carr, and Arne Westerman. Besides landscapes, she also enjoys rendering flowers as subjects as well as figures.

Gene Rantz, Paintings (Full Gallery Show) August 19-21/Reception, Friday, 6-9 p.m./Gallery Open, Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m./Sun., noon-3 p.m.
Gene Rantz worked in graphic art as an illustrator and art director from 1957 until 1985 when he began a career in fine art. His work is reminiscent of the early impressionists: colorful, atmospheric and most inviting. A half century of study, experience, and the love of his craft are evident in each brush stroke. His appreciation and familiarity with Northern Michigan manifests in magical representation on canvas or paper the splendors of the nature around us. During winter months, Gene paints Florida’s Gulf Coast and the deserts of Arizona.

Fremont Thompson, Drawings & Paintings (Mini-show) August 22-September 2, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Artist Fremont Thompson, 46, lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He teaches drawing at two local community colleges and also runs a small construction company. He has been painting and drawing his entire life. He loves to paint people and their interactions with the natural world. In his twenties he worked at Interlochen Arts camp and fell in love with the area. He dreams of one day living on the Leelanau Peninsula, spending his days painting and drawing the beautiful landscape and interesting people of the area.

Teri Gillespie, Paintings (Mini-show) September 5-16, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Glen Arbor Art Association
Teri Gillespie lives and works in southeastern Michigan near the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge where she finds inspiration for both sporting art and wildlife subjects. She balances full time work in 911 emergency communications with what has become an equally full time pursuit of artistic accomplishment. Her paintings have been featured on The Retriever Journal, The Field Trial Magazine as well as the Duck’s Unlimited Clothing line. Teri paints in her private home studio where she has first-hand views of both bird behavior and the surrounding fields and wildlife. Joan Gurthet, Paintings (Mini-show) September 19-30, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Glen Arbor Art Association
Joan Gurthet is a year round resident of Leelanau County and is excited to be finally living in the area that has so influenced her painting. Her background is in art education from Western Michigan University. Painting is something she has done most of her life – with oil, acrylic and watercolor. For the last several years she has been using acrylics like watercolor on tissue paper. When dry, pieces of this tissue are applied to canvas or heavy paper as a collage. Acrylics are then applied to suggest the subject matter. Her recent work is done using this method. Joan has several of her paintings in private collections.

Sue Quinlan, Paintings (Mini-show) October 17-28, Monday-Friday, 9-1
Sue Quinlan is an award winning pastel and oils artist working and living on the Leelanau Peninsula. She has a degree from Michigan State University in fine arts and attends workshops taught by nationally known artists. Her work has been in national, regional and local juried exhibitions. Sue has worked in many mediums for many years. Her favorite thing is to express the moment of a scene, a person, an event while she’s in the midst of it.
