Empire holds Roy Taghon Snowmobile Drag Race tomorrow

From staff reports

The Empire Snowmobile Drag Race Roy Taghon Memorial is scheduled for Saturday, January 23, at the Empire Airport on County Road 677, south of M-72, after being postponed last month for a lack of snow.

Registration for the event runs from 8-10:30 am on Saturday. The races begin at 11 am.

In this 2019 video, race organizer Soni Aylsworth tells us what the race is all about.

And here’s live video from the race two years ago.

The late Roy Taghon was a true “sled head,” a master organ player and enjoyed music, according to the event’s Facebook page.

“If he wasn’t out testing or riding his snowmobile you could find him behind Taghon’s Corners (now the Empire BP gas station) in the Jet Shack working on his snowmobile. Roy was also involved in the Empire Catholic Church playing the organ or piano. Roy worked for his parents at the gas station and could ring you up faster than you could say hi! Roy would also help out anyone that had a snowmobile question. He was a member of Hard Core Sledder which is a website for snowmobiling.”
