Empire Asparagus Festival seeks submissions for Ode to Asparagus poetry, recipe contests

From staff reports

The Glen Lake Library will help celebrate the return of the beloved Empire Asparagus Festival on June 4 with their Ode to Asparagus poetry reading. Poets young and old are invited to submit their asparagus-themed poems. All styles are welcome, be it sonnet, haiku, or even limericks. Poems can be emailed to info@glenlakelibrary.net; mailed to GLCL, PO Box 325, Empire, MI 49630; or may even be dropped off at the library itself. Then, come to the library on Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m., and recite your inspired verse for our assembled poetry fans. The reading will take place outdoors, weather permitting, or in the Program Room if needed. All submissions will be read, ideally by the poets themselves, with a “Best in Show” awarded for most inspired presentation, as selected by the audience.

It is easy and free to enter the fun and well-attended Empire Asparagus Festival recipe contest. Just bring your favorite asparagus dish (enough to accommodate very small 80-100 servings) along with your entry form complete with your recipe to the Empire Township Hall between 11-11:58 a.m. on Saturday, June 4. The judging starts at noon and delicious tasting begins as soon as the judges have carefully evaluated (tasted) all recipes. If you make soup, a crock-pot is a good idea if you want your soup to stay warm.

Please click here to complete the Asparagus Festival Recipe Contest entry form. A panel of asparagus-obsessed judges will sample the dishes in a blind tasting and make their decision. The judges will award the top two recipes and then the public’s votes will award the “People’s Choice Award.” Fabulous prizes will be awarded after the judging and tast- ing are done.

The Glen Arbor Sun will publish this year’s winning poems and recipes in a future edition.
