Discover historic Leelanau through digital tour
From staff reports
Discover Historic Leelanau through a PowerPoint tour of officially recognized sites, presented by historians Christine Byron and Thomas Wilson on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. This free community event is sponsored by the Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society.
The new Historic Leelanau map brochure distributed by the Historic Leelanau Network has been very successful and is indicative of the rise in cultural tourism. A free Discover Historic Leelanau PowerPoint tour will present more than 40 officially acknowledged sites of historical significance. Some have a Michigan historical marker, some are listed in the Michigan Register of Historic Sites, others on the National Register of Historic Places, and one is a National Historic Landmark. Both historic and current photographs will be viewed. Re-discover familiar sites like the Empire School or Suttons Bay Depot while learning about unfamiliar ones like Wood How Lodge in Northport or the Greycote Cottage in Leland. This engaging and informative program has been prepared by historians Christine Byron and Tom Wilson, who have authored numerous local vintage views books. Hopefully, it will begin the process of identifying additional sites and structures and encourage the community to continue to pursue appropriate historical designations. An outline will be distributed of designations along with ideas to sort through the process. More historical designations and markers will build more interest in cultural tourism.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. This community event is sponsored by Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society whose first project has been to Save The Poor Farm Barn. This phase is to secure a Michigan historical marker for the county poor farm. Refer any questions to Barb at siepker@aol.com or call 231-334-4395.
