Clearing Alligator Hill Trail
From staff reports
This week, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore workers began clearing the Alligator Hill Trail of downed trees, following the Aug. 2 storm that decimated local forests. Alligator Hill is located just west of downtown Glen Arbor, north of Little Glen Lake, and offers stunning views of Sleeping Bear Bay.
The Park hopes to have at least one loop of the popular trail open by the time Deer Hunting Firearm season begins on Nov. 15. The crew aspires to have the entire trail open before the snow flies. Alligator Hill is popular with hikers and cross-country skiers, alike.
According to Sleeping Bear Dunes Deputy Superintendent Tom Ulrich, the Park is on the verge of netting between $200 and $250,000 from a regional Park office for this job and others related to cleanup following the storm. Anticipating these jobs, the Park kept 6-8 extra workers employed on a contingency basis after Labor Day.
