Will Sleeping Bear Dunes break last year’s record for annual visitors to our National Park? 1,683,553 people visited Sleeping Bear in 2016, smashing the previous record of 1,535,633 set in 2015. The visitation tally in 2017 is more than 26,000 people ahead of last year’s pace, following a strong April and September, and a monster July.

The Fourth of July had come and gone, and things were relatively quiet; the doors to the house were left open to allow the breeze to pass through. An old retriever lay sound asleep in the front of the house. Near him, a pet bunny was safely caged in another room.

More than 900 athletes came out to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore early Saturday morning to participate in the ninth annual M22 Challenge. Nicholas Amato, 20, of Suttons Bay, was the first in the men’s group to cross the finish line at a time of 1:15:06, with Jamie Endicott, 24, of Oak Park, securing the top honor among the women with a time of 1:26:46.

The beloved and spear-ited 14th annual Empire Asparagus Festival is back. This year’s festival is Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20. Our Friday night block party kicks off the festival at 7 p.m., with a pig roast and live music under the big tent on Front Street in Empire. There’s a $5 entry fee and the pig roast is $11 per person.

Northern Michigan’s newest member of Congress, Rep. Jack Bergman, is showing up all over the 1st District — just not always in person. Progressive-minded citizens have unsuccessfully sought an audience with Bergman to voice their concerns about the Trump presidency, the new White House cabinet, the administration’s Russian connection, executive orders that target Muslims, refugees and Latino immigrants, and a potential repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Instead they have posted “Where’s Jack?” posters on social media and in physical locations in towns across the district.

Could Trump’s hiring freeze affect staff, and operations, at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which typically hires 100 seasonal employees in May when it opens popular mainstays such as the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb and Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in time for the summer tourism season?
