Northern Michigan painter Holly Sturges will show her latest works at the Lake Street Studios Center Gallery in Glen Arbor from June 28–July 4 with anopening reception Friday, June 28, from 6-8 pm.
“Knock, knock; Housekeeping!” That will be the mantra for the dedicated group cleaning and laundering their way through the busy summer season under the direction of Kristin Frodl, housekeeping supervisor for Leelanau Vacation Rentals (LVR) in Glen Arbor.
“Although the water coming from over the (Leland Dam in Fishtown) is forceful, it’s not the real cause of the floods,” Leelanau County drain commissioner Steve Christensen told the Glen Arbor Sun. “When you look at the forces involved, the flooding is from Lake Michigan-Huron.”
Safety issues due to rising waters has forced Leland’s Fishtown Preservation Society (FPS) to cancel its June 21 “Shanty Aid” kickoff fundraiser. Ironically, the event was to be a benefit to save Fishtown from rising water. Meanwhile, the water continues to rise, threatening shanties and docks.
“Marks On Clay,” a three-day, hands-on workshop June 21-23, explores pottery decoration beyond simply glazing. Offered through the Glen Arbor Arts Center (GAAC), potter John Huston leads students through traditional methods of using colored slips for sgraffito and slip trailing, oxide mixes for over/underglaze brushwork, and carving and impressing techniques.
Three northern Michigan authors discuss the different ways Leelanau County, its homes and places figure into their fiction and nonfiction writing on June 23 at 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center.
Polka Fest has fresh legs this year. For the first time, Michigan-made vodka and Polish beer will be served in Cedar. Native son Rifino Valentine, who developed the wildly successful, high-quality Valentine Vodka spirits brand in Detroit, will return “home” and toast to his roots. Cedar has an energetic new booster in Kathleen Bittner Koch, a 37-year-old Hamtramck native who moved here five years ago to buy a farm.
Beginning on the Summer Solstice, Yoga on the Beach and the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes are partnering up to offer these outdoor, donation-based yoga classes to the community.
On June 22 the Leelanau Community Cultural Center (LCCC) at the Old Art Building will host a Solstice Celebration to honor the summer sun. The event will also celebrate the installation of the 20-kilowatt rooftop solar system made possible by a $60,000 grant received from All Points North Foundation.
