Our unusual cold weather is actually caused by global warming. Our extremely cold winter was outbalanced by simultaneous record-breaking heat in Australia. Meanwhile, the Arctic continues to be warmer than normal. That affects everything above the equator.

We had a 15-year period of intense evaporation followed by a cold snap (the Polar Vortex) in a sequence that was unprecedented. The weather turned. Quickly. This indicates a change. The range is new and the speed of the swing is new. “If you have events that are not part of your historical record that represent a change in conditions, that’s the definition of climate change,” said scientist Andrew Gronewold.

One such tidy structure sprouted last fall on Burdickville Rd, just west of Maple City. But what they sell in this land of foodies and agritourism is both surprising yet makes so much sense that it’s a wonder no one else has thought of it before now.

Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak in Empire wants to thank dear friends and loyal customers for your support over this decade and a half. “It has been an honor, and an absolute hoot!” says the Skrocki family. To celebrate 15 years of business, community and pure fun, the business will kick off the summer with a proper party, June 28-30.

Looking out at the misty, gray day, noting yet another day of rain and cool weather, Emily Goodall mused, “Well, it’s good to have one of those years once in a while to show the whole range. If it continues this way, it will be a great year for bubbly, and dry, crisp whites. But we wouldn’t be upset if the weather took a turn towards the hot and dry soon.”
