Calling all quilters

From staff reports

Are you a visual artist interested in exploring a new medium? Are you a quilter, but do not think you are an artist, or want to expand beyond the traditional? The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) is offering a special Fabric Art workshop this September. “The Quilt as Art: Introduction to Non-Traditional, Contemporary Quilt Making” will be a two-day weekend event Sept. 8-9 at the GAAA building in Glen Arbor.

Taught by fabric artist Desiree Vaughn, students will learn simple techniques to assemble art quilts. They will explore surface design, such as mark making and embellishment ideas by using found objects, beads, and even Tyvek. A discussion about good design principles and they elements of design will give students confidence as they work on a small quilt.

Desiree Vaughn is an awarding-winning artist with a love for surface design. She has been teaching for the past six years in her studio and for various art organizations throughout Michigan, including the Crooked Tree Art Center and the Dennos Museum.

This class is open to anyone interested in exploring the quilt as art. Sewing machines are optional. To register, call (231) 334-6112, or visit GlenArborArt.org.
