Antique apples program at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

It is apple season and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be hosting an Antique-Apple Program on Saturday, Oct. 8, from noon to 4 p.m. It’s an event for the entire family; jump into fun kid’s activities, ask volunteer experts about the varieties of apples in the National Lakeshore and learn about their exciting apple grafting project, check out the nursery, watch a cider press in action, tour the farmhouses, and enjoy the Grow Benzie food truck with cider and caramel apples, too! Apples played a big role in Port Oneida during its peak and apple lovers of today still realize their value. Come on out and enjoy your National Lakeshore; visitors can even pick up to one bushel of apples per day.
The program will be held at the Kelderhouse farm in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District, four miles north of Glen Arbor. Take M-22 north, park at the Charles Olsen farm (which will also be open for tours), and walk 0.1 mile on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail to the event. Handicap parking is also available at the site. Directional signs will be placed in the area to help participants locate the venue. The program will be offered rain or shine. There is no cost to participate. Participants need only purchase the Park Entrance Pass or have an Annual Pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun.
