Spend a week at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Become a Wilderness Ambassador

From staff reports

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is recruiting 10 middle/high school students, grades 8-11, to spend a week camping in the park while playing, learning, and providing service. There is no participation fee. The National Lakeshore will provide all group gear and food during the trip.

The Wilderness Ambassador Youth program will emphasize service, learning, and recreation. For the service component of the program, students will be developing and producing a Leave-No-Trace video and assisting with trail and campground cleanup. Students will also be learning about wilderness resources, wilderness skills, risk management, Leave-No-Trace, leadership, teamwork, and career development. During the seven-day adventure, students will experience wilderness recreational activities such as backpacking, camping, swimming, nature observations, journaling, games and more.

If you are a middle/high school student, or know a middle/high school student (grades 8-11), who is interested in developing life skills, adding experience points to their resume, and going on a memorable wilderness expedition, go to the National Lakeshore’s website at www.nps.gov/slbe/learn/kidsyouth/sbwa.htm

The National Lakeshore plans to select students soon, so send in your application by Monday, April 25, 2016. For additional questions about the program, call Park Ranger Joshua Schultz at 231-326-4735.
