Views of the destruction from the sky
Sun co-editor Mike Buhler took these photos of the destruction to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Glen Arbor area following the Aug. 2 megastorm.
The large photos show the top of Alligator Hill, with the D.H. Day barns, Dune Climb, and Lake Michigan at the top (west). If you were to hike up from the Stocking Drive parking lot, this is what you would first encounter.
Next is a view with the M-22 House in the foreground, the stretch of M-22 from Sunset Drive to Glen Arbor, and the massive destruction that fronts M-22, then wraps around to Forest Haven and the parking lot there, and then further into the Heritage Trail.
The third photo shows Sleeping Bear Bay at the top left corner, the Sylvan Inn at the start of Forest Haven as it reaches southeast, and the Heritage Trail heading west. Many will recall the massive beech trees that greeted visitors to the trail from the road entrance, and are now smashed against the side of the hill.
