The Townships of Glen Arbor and Empire are currently accepting applications and resumes for the position of fire chief. The Glen Lake Fire Department is a full-time, unionized, ALS transport agency which provides fire, rescue and EMS services to approximately 2,000 year-round residents.

The government shutdown, about to enter its third week, has closed all National Parks, including the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. That is hurting several Empire businesses near the National Lakeshore’s visitor center, and it’s doing so at the slow time of year when they need business the most.

Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc. is a proud partner of the seventh annual Dune Dash, a 4-mile run/walk along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 9 a.m. at the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb. Registration is open at DuneDash.com. Registration ranges from $20-$30 per person based on age and prices go up $5 after Aug. 16.

Once again, the Port Oneida Rural Historic District awakens from its peaceful slumber and comes alive both Friday and Saturday, August 10-11. Beginning at 10 a.m. each day and running until 4 p.m., visitors are invited to step back in time to actively experience life as it was in this once active community of robust farms of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The fair promotes the preservation of rural traditional skills, crafts, landscapes, and communities of the Upper Great Lakes Region through education and artistic expression.

Historic Sleeping Bear will hold its ninth annual Port Oneida Heritage Run/walk on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Port Oneida Farms Heritage Center/Olsen farm. The fundraiser for the nonprofit partner of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore supports preservation of the National Park’s historic structures.

Time for a day of fun and discovery with park rangers and skilled volunteers at the annual Glen Haven Days. The event will be held Saturday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glen Haven Historic Village and U.S. Life-Saving Service (USLSS) Station at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The festivities will include hands-on activities and costumed reenactments. All programs are free with a valid park pass.
