Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will again host their successful barn restoration workshop on June 13-18 at the John Burfiend Barn on Port Oneida Road, four miles north of Glen Arbor on M-22. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the Michigan Barn Preservation Network (MBPN) and the National Lakeshore in developing this series of “hands-on” workshops. The park and the MBPN are providing the skilled labor to put on this workshop.
“This was the hardest year yet,” Jeff Smoke declared as he crossed the finish line to win the 2016 M22 Challenge, which was held on Saturday, June 11 — his fifth time earning that title. “The competition keeps getting harder.” Smoke, 38, of Niles, Mich., kayaked on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team. Smoke won this year’s race with an overall time of 1:11:29, and most impressive was his paddle time — just 14 minutes and 44 seconds.

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail ambassadors help visitors by answering questions, giving directions, and sometimes handing out coupons for Cherry Republic ice cream when they find trail users “Doing Something Right”. Ambassadors are also Friends of Sleeping Bear’s eyes and ears on the trail reporting maintenance or safety issues that need to be resolved.

Scott Tucker, a 19-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS), has been selected as the Superintendent of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Tucker currently serves as the Superintendent of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, which consists of seven units along the Columbia River and the Pacific Coast from Long Beach, Washington, to Cannon Beach, Oregon. He will begin his new assignment in mid June.

The National Park Service will name the next superintendent to run Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore by the end of May — if not sooner — Park spokesperson Christine Powell told the Glen Arbor Sun today. Powell works out of the National Park’s Midwest Regional office in Omaha, Neb.
