Samaritans’ Closet comes to Empire

Business Feature, News

Everything old is new again, as Samaritans’ Closet proves at its store in Lake Leelanau. Which is why it is now opening one in Empire. “It is a successful business model. Everyone loves it,” says Mary Stanton, executive director of Leelanau Christian Neighbors. The faith-based non-profit owns and runs Samaritans’ Closet, which stocks and sells items that are old, vintage, pre-loved, used—pick one. Actually, pick two, or three, or as many as you care to. Whether clothing and housewares, furniture and furnishings, art—anything someone wants to part with and that someone else may want can be found at the store. Now the longtime Lake Leelanau store is being joined by a second across the county. The new location is due to host its grand opening May 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 11840 S. Lacore Rd. It will then run on the same schedule as the Lake Leelanau store: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 10-3 p.m. on Saturdays.

Leelanau Christian Neighbors announces expansion with new “Samaritans’ Closet” location in Empire

News

Leelanau Christian Neighbors announced today the expansion of its retail operations with a second Samaritans’ Closet thrift store, located in Empire. This new location aims to better serve the residents and visitors of the west side of Leelanau County, providing easier access to affordable goods and a convenient local donation center. LCN has officially signed the lease and is currently in the process of renovating the facility to create a welcoming shopping and donation experience. The organization expects to begin accepting community donations in mid-May. If renovations stay on track, LCN aims to host a grand opening and be fully operational by Memorial Day weekend, providing a fresh shopping destination just in time for the start of the summer season.

Community pillar Tricia Denton faces challenges of her own

Local Personality

Imagine putting in the interminable work required to face down alcoholism and maintain your sobriety for 30 years. Through that journey, you mentor dozens of other women in the throes of their own addiction recovery. Now imagine your world is rocked by a rare neurodegenerative disease called Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) that, among other cruel symptoms, causes your speech to slur. Most people would feel justified in reacting with anger or indignation but not Tricia Denton of Maple City. “I just found it humorous. We always have the opportunity to turn those situations into teaching and awareness opportunities,” she says with remarkable grace. Click here to read more, and find a link to support Denton’s GoFundMe campaign.

Thrifting through Leelanau’s consignment shops

News

“What lovely hand-painted glasses these are! Each one so unique!” I exclaimed as we sat down to the beautifully set table on this farm north of Northport. “I found those at the Samaritan’s Closet in Lake Leelanau,” Kathy Garthe told me with pride. Whenever her daughter Nikki comes to visit they go thrifting, and are sure to stop by the local consignment shops, The Roost in Suttons Bay and Jaffe’s Resale and Consignment in Lake Leelanau. I remember noticing the elegant purple satin coat dress Nikki wore with such flare a couple years back, from The Roost, as I stroke the soft cashmere of my camel twin set sweater I had found myself at The Roost last winter.

Michelle Ferrarese’s love of the farm

News

“I didn’t grow up farming. Farming wasn’t even on my radar, though we always had a garden where we lived in the suburbs,” begins Michelle Ferrarese, owner, farmer and prime motivator of Birch Point Farm, located between Lake Leelanau and Bugai Road, northwest of Traverse City.

The little thrift store with the big heart

Business Feature, Local Personality, Upcoming Event

Samaritans’ Closet, a plain brown house over the bridge in the village of Lake Leelanau, is becoming a destination thrift shop. On this particular day the chartreuse leaves of the willows and poplars are just beginning to show. The red twig dogwood is redder than usual and the maples are a dusky ruby and pink. Cardinals call, “Teacher, teacher,” in the marsh along the narrows.
