For Leelanau County, 2022 was a year of new businesses growing in our communities, a year of celebrating historic legacies, and a year of grieving the loss of community pillars who left us. The Glen Arbor Sun’s top 10 most-read online stories of the year included homages to Beryl Skrocki, whose family business Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak helped popularize standup paddle boarding in Empire and along the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, longtime Cherry Republic general manager Kathy Baarstad, and storied Glen Arbor realtor and Sugar Loaf ski coach John Peppler.

Vacasa, the largest rental company in North America, has purchased Leelanau Vacation Rentals in Glen Arbor from Ranae Ihme. The changeover will take place at the end of August. Most of the local staff will stay on, and Ranae and Bob Ihme will continue to own and run Glen Arbor Outdoor and LVR Realty, which they have renamed Leelanau Vacation Realty. The Ihmes and Vacasa will operate out of the same building across the street from the Glen Arbor park.

“Knock, knock; Housekeeping!” That will be the mantra for the dedicated group cleaning and laundering their way through the busy summer season under the direction of Kristin Frodl, housekeeping supervisor for Leelanau Vacation Rentals (LVR) in Glen Arbor.

Wondering what to get Dad or Grandpa for Father’s Day? If he’s a railroad buff, why not give him a few nights in a real caboose? Back in the woodsy shadow of the Sleeping Bear Dunes sits a large, newly painted and refurbished caboose replete with bed, TV and Wi-Fi, a microwave and small fridge, even heat and air conditioning.

There’s a whole lot going on at the Glen Arbor Park. When the Sun visited May 7 at 4 p.m. for this update, we saw earthmovers trawling back and forth, smoothing the ground for three pickleball courts over by the hardware’s garden center; plumbers working on the bathroom facility in the center of things; a landscape architect shooting pictures over by the adult workout equipment, while workers for the general contractor were busy in the southwest quadrant of the park.

LVR Realty owner Ranae Ihme enjoyed a banner 2016. She was the highest grossing agent in Glen Arbor (within the Traverse Area Association of Realtors (TAAR) MLS system) and was the third highest grossing agent in Leelanau County last year.

MyNorthMedia has produced a snazzy new video for Leelanau Vacation Rentals’ homepage that advertises the Glen Arbor area as offering “something for everyone”. There’s outdoor recreation for all ages, shopping, dining, drinking and lounging on the beach.

Many of Glen Arbor’s employers can’t find employees, and if things don’t change, some foresee the area’s economy drying up. Last year, three major Glen Arbor businesses — Cherry Republic (CR), Anderson’s IGA, and Leelanau Vacation Rentals (LVR) — were short an estimated total of 100 summer employees.

Pathways to Sleeping Bear and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has released a dazzling new video that extolls the virtues of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, the 27-mile multi-use trail that will parallel M-22 and M-109 in and near the National Park. Construction will begin on the Heritage Trail late this summer.
