Grupo Aye!, the hottest Cuban salsa band in the Midwest, will make you want to dance in a show that includes Leelanau School alum and conga virtuoso Rob Mulligan ‘83. The Leelanau School, a non-profit, college preparatory boarding and day school in Glen Arbor is holding its first-ever Rock the River! fundraiser, rain or shine, Friday, June 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. The show features Grand Rapids based GRUPO AYE`, a first rate, 11-piece Cuban salsa band led by Robert Mulligan, a 1983 graduate of The Leelanau School.

The Crystal River is a little green today but this is not an early St. Patrick’s Day celebration by our Chicago friends. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is treating the river to control the lamprey population.
Six women from the Leelanau Independent Women for Democratic Action (LIWDA) attended the Democracy Convention in Madison from Aug. 24-27. They included Barb Schneider, Betty Bushey, Jenny Olson, BJ Christensen, Betsy Johnson and Elsie Peterson.
On Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. the country-folk musician Rita Hosking will perform outdoors on The Leelanau School Graduation Green, north of Glen Arbor. Rain location is the Leelanau School Student Center. Hosking’s concert concludes the 2011 Manitou Music Festival, which for 21 years has treated Leelanau County residents to jazz, classical, blues, folk, country, celtic, bluegrass and world music.

They don’t wear their sparkly Wonder Woman suits out in public, or leap tall buildings in a single bound, but the members of southern Leelanau County’s two well-known service clubs are definitely community superheroes. Both the Glen Lake Woman’s Club (GLWC) and the Glen Arbor Women’s Club offer a warm welcome to new members who are seasonal or year-round residents, provide community fellowship and enjoyable social and civic activities that greatly enhance the quality of life for the people of the Glen Lake area as a whole.
The Beach Bards Bonfire — the storytelling and poetry festival on Friday nights at The Leelanau School beach north of Glen Arbor — begins its 23rd season tonight. Children’s hour starts at 8 p.m., and the adult portion begins at 9 p.m. Bards Norm Wheeler, Anne-Marie Oomen, Bronwyn Jones and Joe VanderMeulen typically lead the performance (stories and poems are recited by-heart, and not read, according to the oral tradition). And musicians usually make an appearance around the fire.
