The Characters of Burdickville, take 2

The future of Burdickville is now. The engagement of Max Miller to Heather LaBerge is another indicator that the next generation of Burdickville-ians is poised to take over from their parents. Max’s mother Pat Miller lives in the house she built in 1988 on MacFarlane Road opposite the foot of Bow Road inside the corner that used to be an apple orchard, but she has been coming here since 1954. Along with sisters Nancy and Jan and brother Don, Pat now owns and operates the Miller Cabins that their parents bought in 1961. So all of the Millers virtually grew up in Burdickville.

Burdickville, the hamlet on the southeast edge of Big Glen Lake, is full of history and characters. And if this area is the most beautiful in America, Burdickville may be the local enclave with the most charm.

Country bird nests in the city

Guillaume and Brook Hazael-Massieux are spreading their wings. The owners of the legendary La Becasse (“the woodcock”) French country restaurant in Burdickville are humming this week into their second nest at 118 Cass Street in downtown Traverse City named Bistro Foufou (“hummingbird”). Their new eatery is the fruit of a three-year process that finally ripened last winter when they negotiated the purchase of Hanna Bistro, a prime location just a block off Front St. in the busy center of Traverse City.

“Peachy” Rentenbach runs for County Commission

Carolyn “Peachy” Rentenbach, former owner of La Becasse Restaurant, has announced that she is a candidate for the Leelanau County Commission in November. Rentenbach is running for the seat being vacated by David Marshall. District 6 is comprised of Empire, Glen Arbor and Cleveland Townships.

Please don’t come to Leelanau County

Here are some reasons you may not want to come to Leelanau County: It’s out of your way. No matter where you are going, Leelanau County is not on the way unless you are in Leelanau County already, in which case you must either go back the way you came or get seriously wet. This has to do with the nature of peninsulas and there is nothing to be done about it.
