Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair marks 50 years plus 1

This year marks the 51st annual Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair, a juried Art Fair with artists carefully selected to represent a wide variety of one-of-a-kind art pieces for sale at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. The Art Fair—to be held at the Glen Arbor Township Hall on Wednesday, July 19, from 10 am to 4 pm—features artisans in many mediums including pottery, painting, textiles, woodworking, and jewelry. Each year, thousands of people shop for that unique piece of art, either for themselves or for a special gift.

Glen Arbor Women’s Club announces 2015 scholarship winners

The Glen Arbor Women’s Club is pleased to award scholarships to five outstanding young women graduating from Glen Lake High School. The scholarships were awarded on the basis of academics, community involvement, and overall achievement. The scholarships were presented by Carol Becker, representing the Women’s Club, at the Senior Awards Ceremony at Glen Lake High School on May 21.

There is trash on our beaches, the climate is changing, and Glen Lake High School’s Students for World Awareness (SWA) want our community to do something about it. With Earth Day approaching, the students of the club have planned an event to increase environmental consciousness within their Leelanau County community.

A picture perfect race day for the Running Bear

The fifth annual Running Bear Run on July 26 was another huge success with a picture perfect day and 700 runners in attendance. There were 555 runners in the 5K and 145 kids in the half mile Kids’ Run. A great time was had by all.

Glen Lake senior awarded NCAA equestrian scholarship

Rachel Reid, 18, of Rochester and Maple City, Michigan, has been awarded an NCAA Division I equestrian scholarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where she will attend as a freshman this fall. An honor student and student council member at Glen Lake High School, Reid graduated in June.

Leelanau native’s leaps of faith land her in Latin America

Sarah Wigton Dominguez’s tropical dream looks a bit different, however. The 26-year-old, who recently earned double master’s degrees in social work and public health at the University of Michigan, pictures a lush island –— say, Hispaniola, home to the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic — that includes clean water, blooming mothers with healthy babies, and thriving communities empowered to make educated choices about their daily lives.
