Teaching like Yoda

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore deputy superintendent Tom Ulrich, who will retire from the Park later this month, once heard a poignant analogy at a leadership conference that compared the old style of managing a National Park to the Star Wars jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, who deftly and constantly fends off outside threats with his light saber. By contrast, the new style of Park management is not to deflect or fight off criticism from the public, but to engage, listen and teach as Yoda does. Ulrich arrived at Sleeping Bear Dunes in late 2002 at a time when Lakeshore staff was reeling from widespread criticism after it promoted an unpopular new General Management Plan that would expand portions of the Park classified as “wilderness.” His tenure at Sleeping Bear Dunes dawned a collaborative relationship between the Park and local citizens.

Old Friends return to Old Settlers with July 13 tribute concert

Last summer’s Simon & Garfunkel tribute concert at Old Settlers’ Park was such a hit, they’re doing it again but with one major improvement. Enter “Looking Forward,” the trio made up of local favorites and all-around good guys—former Glen Lake music teachers Pat Niemisto, John Kumjian, and urban agriculturalist Chris Skellenger, of Buckets of Rain fame.

Summer Singers seek voices

The Summer Singers Community Choir is looking for a few good voices. People who love to sing are invited to join this 40-plus, mixed-voice choir. Weekly rehearsals begin Tuesday, June 18, at 7 p.m.at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, 4902 W. MacFarlane Road in Burdickville. There are no auditions. All ages are welcome.

A Pair of Spades on stage in Glen Arbor

Manitou Music Festival closes with Summer Singers’ performance

The Summer Singers, an all-volunteer group of 50 voices, punctuate the 2018 Manitou Music Festival (MMF). This traditional MMF closing concert is Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. The concert takes place at Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, 4902 W. MacFarlane Road, in Burdickville. The concert is free.

Grand old flag tradition continues at Old Settlers on July Fourth

Among the many Fourth of July celebrations in Leelanau County, one of the longest running may be the Flag Raising Ceremony held at the century-plus Old Settlers Picnic Grounds in Burdickville. Sponsored by the Glen Lake Women’s Club, chairwoman Josephine Zara promises “an old-fashioned, country flag-raising,” beginning at 10 o’clock with services by local Cub Scout Pack #111. Retired United States Navy officer Peter Van Nort of Glen Arbor, who served with Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, will give the address, “We Are the People.” Soprano Susan Pocklington of Empire will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner,” accompanied by Maple City’s Patrick Niemisto on keyboard, Amy Peterson on flute, and David Watt on drum, both of Glen Arbor. A community sing-along, free flags for the children, cookies and lemonade will conclude the event.

Leelanau native’s leaps of faith land her in Latin America

Sarah Wigton Dominguez’s tropical dream looks a bit different, however. The 26-year-old, who recently earned double master’s degrees in social work and public health at the University of Michigan, pictures a lush island –— say, Hispaniola, home to the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic — that includes clean water, blooming mothers with healthy babies, and thriving communities empowered to make educated choices about their daily lives.
