After a one-year hiatus, the Glen Lake Library will once again host a poetry contest as part of the 2015 Empire Asparagus Festival. Submit your asparagus-inspired verse by Thursday, May 14. Poems can be dropped off at the library; mailed to Glen Lake Library, PO Box 325, Empire, MI 49630; or emailed to info@glenlakelibrary.net. Be sure to include your contact information with your poem. Contestants are encouraged to come present their own poetry at the reading on Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 pm. Prizes will be awarded in both adult (age 18+) and children’s categories.
The pristine water quality of Big and Little Glen Lakes along with the protected shorelines, natural hillsides, turquoise water, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore being the largest riparian on the lake, it is hard to find a more unique and beautiful lake in the country. Furthermore, this national treasure should be protected so as to keep it in a natural and pristine condition, now and for future generations.
When the US Army Corps of Engineers measured Lake Michigan and Lake Huron water levels at the end of December, they discovered that the depth had receded to 576.15 feet above sea level — breaking the record for the previous all-time-low of 576.2 feet set in 1964. That’s not a record to celebrate. Numbers are complex and difficult to comprehend. But beaches along Sleeping Bear Bay offered more clarity, and sobering clarity at that. The shoreline has receded substantially from previous years, leaving behind a hard, rocky surface in places, and prompting widespread alarm.
At last year’s annual meeting of the Glen Lake Association (GLA), watershed biologist Rob Karner gave a sneak preview of how the dredging of Hatlem Pond was being targeted as one of its major water quality projects for 2012.
The Glen Arbor Township Board held a special meeting today to respond to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regarding an application for a marina expansion on Big Glen Lake. On the Narrows Marina owner Conor McCahill seeks to add an additional 39 boat slips on a new dock, bringing the total to 46, as well as increase the moorings to 16.
The Glen Lake Association has received a 2011 National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) Award – one of four winners selected from organizations throughout the United States. The award honors associations for their extraordinary achievement in Fish Habitat Conservation.
A boat wash workshop will be held on April 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Leelanau Community Government Center Community Meeting Room, lower level. Learn protocol for washing your own watercraft and recreational equipment and the importance of using the boat wash at the DNR site on Little Glen Lake.
