Summer visitors miss the early flowers that bloom as the trees unfurl their leaves, so here is an illustration to give you a taste of that beauty. Leelanau County in May is a glorious experience. Wildflowers spring up on the hardwood forest floor, spreading a carpet of green and white over dead leaves of winter.
Sleeping Bear Gallery owner Heather Caverly hopes to bring an art revolution to Empire. Caverly purchased the Empire Clipper Building across Front Street from the Village Office in January and, together with curator Becky Willis, she aims to turn it into a haven that features artists in residence, demonstrations and lectures and, of course, displays of unique art including metals, wood, glass, fibers, paintings, sculptures, ceramics and photography. Caverly and her husband Mark live in the apartment upstairs.
Miranda Monroe, a Registered Dietitian and principal of Grand Traverse Nutrition, will share tips for easy and healthy meal preparation using local foods available to everyone in Leelanau County. A series of four, hour-long classes, will be held at the Glen Arbor Athletic Club every other Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
The first phase of the long awaited Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail — between the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb and downtown Glen Arbor — is nearly complete. Pavement stretches nearly half the way from the Dune Climb to Glen Haven, but the remainder of the trail is already formed and tamped down. The trail’s grand opening is scheduled for June 20. In the meantime, check out this narrated video of a bike ride Saturday along the trail.
The Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) second Artist-in-Residence, Rachel Drelles of Muskegon, Mich., is a printmaker and woodblock artist. The public is invited to her presentation on Thursday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the GAAA’s building, 6031 S. Lake Street, across from Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor. Drelles is a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design and has been student teaching in addition to furthering her own artistic life in printmaking, intaglio, collograph and woodblock prints.
Imagine, 800 kayaks lying side by side, end to end in rows on the bank of Little Glen Lake in Glen Arbor. A few yards away, picture 800 bikes hanging in organized racks just off of M-22. Beyond the bikes and across M-22, envision 800 athletes ranging from 14 to 71 years old and hailing from 15 states and countries as far as Switzerland running up the Sleeping Bear Dunes Climb. What you are picturing is the fourth annual M-22 Challenge — which will take place this year on June 9 — and if you’re unfamiliar with where it’s taking place, just know that the athletes will tread on what was named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” by Good Morning America last year.
The Glen Arbor Art Association is pleased to announce the 2012 roster of Artists-in-Residence. The residency program provides visiting artists with a respite from daily responsibilities, which enables them to concentrate on their work in a unique locale. Residencies are considered in writing, visual arts, photography, sculpture, fiber arts, ceramics, music, philosophy and creative research.
