This summer-long series of concerts will be held at the top of Bay Mountain at The Homestead resort north of Glen Arbor. Mingle with old friends and new during the Happy Hour. The Glen Lake Chamber is requesting volunteers to be parade marshals for the big Glen Arbor 4th of July parade. We need volunteers to bring brooms to the parade to sweep back the candy from the street to the kids along the parade route as well as assisting along the route from Glen Haven into town. Former business owner, social worker, community activist and nature lover Mollie Weeks passed away last month at age 78. Weeks, who is survived by her husband, political syndicated columnist and author George Weeks, left a lasting legacy in Glen Arbor.
Ashley Fehrmann has two passions — shopping and yoga. The 24-year-old Chicago native who summers in Glen Arbor has co-managed the clothing fashion store Queen of Couture, along with her mom Barbara, on the deck at Boone Docks since 2005 (Read our feature on Queen of Couture here, GlenArborSun.com/queen-of-couture-is-the-cutting-edge-of-fashion/). Now, with Yoga Queen, Ashley is fulfilling her other interest, which focuses less on accessories and outerwear and more on inner core strength and peace.
She’s back again and holding on to her trophy. Keri Pawielski of St. Joseph, Mich., claimed first place in the women’s division of the M-22 Challenge for the fourth year in a row with a time of 1:23:43. Pawielski also took home the Queen of the Dune trophy for reaching the top of the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb first.
Grupo Aye!, the hottest Cuban salsa band in the Midwest, will make you want to dance in a show that includes Leelanau School alum and conga virtuoso Rob Mulligan ‘83. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has approved a bid by On the Narrows Marina to expand on Big Glen Lake, despite local opposition and concern by the Glen Lake Association (GLA). MDEQ officer Robyn Schmidt confirmed to the Glen Arbor Sun that the draft permit she sent on May 16 to the McCahill family — which owns the marina — was countersigned and returned to the department on June 6. With the exception of moving their mooring buoys closer to shore, On the Narrows is now free to continue its expansion.
Join the Glen Arbor Art Association on Monday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. for its Annual Meeting and celebration of the tenth anniversary of the GAAA building. A brief business meeting will be followed by the Readers’ Theater performance of “Murder in the Casbah”, a Sherlock Holmes tale. The Artist-in-Residence Collection will be exhibited. Refreshments will be served.
Kick off summer in the Most Beautiful Place in America. After a one-year hiatus, the fourth annual Glen Arbor BBQ and Brew Festival will be held on June 16 from noon – 6 p.m. in Glen Arbor, in the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This year the event will be in the center of town, on the corner of Lake Street and M‐22, just a block away from beautiful Lake Michigan.
