The Manitou Music Festival rings in its 21st year on July Fourth weekend with a free Saturday concert by the Northport Community Band, one of Leelanau County’s favorite groups. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to the lawn outside the Glen Arbor Athletic Club for a 4 p.m. concert of patriotic music. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the Glen Arbor Township Hall.

The Beach Bards Bonfire — the storytelling and poetry festival on Friday nights at The Leelanau School beach north of Glen Arbor — begins its 23rd season tonight. Children’s hour starts at 8 p.m., and the adult portion begins at 9 p.m. Bards Norm Wheeler, Anne-Marie Oomen, Bronwyn Jones and Joe VanderMeulen typically lead the performance (stories and poems are recited by-heart, and not read, according to the oral tradition). And musicians usually make an appearance around the fire.

Reading Mrs. Boizard’s mail served as a window through which I could look for glimpses of the thoughts, activities, relationships, commerce and struggles of people living in Glen Arbor just as the town became established in 1856. What we are shown when reading the Boizard letters is how some families lived and loved and partied and struggled 150 years ago in the very town we all love and visit or live in now. We also get a sense of how some things haven’t changed all that much in 150 years.
The Glen Arbor Art Association kicks off this season’s exciting array of classes for children and young adults. Special family fun classes include “Family Plein Air Painting at Thoreson Farm” – a two-hour workshop to create an acrylic painting with your family, and a “Mother and Daughter in the Garden” class, for a unique plein air experience.
