Each year the Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) August Plein Air Paint Out attracts artists from throughout Michigan and the Midwest to paint for a day in the Glen Lake area and then sell their paintings at the popular annual Wet Painting Sale at GAAA’s gallery off Lake Street on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

“Drawn to Water and other enchantments,” an exhibit of oil paintings by Empire artist Mary Sharry, will be on display at the Glen Arbor Art Association gallery at 6031 South Lake Street in Glen Arbor. A reception will be held on Friday, July 20, 6-9 p.m., with continued viewing on Saturday from 1-7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The paintings depict the changing skies and colors of the waters in northern Michigan as well as everyday still life reflections. The Glen Arbor Art Association’s children’s classes provide a variety of art experiences for young artists. Last summer’s successful Art Studio for ages 10-13 is again being offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. for students who want to learn and expand their drawing and painting skills. Wednesday is Drawing Studio and Thursday is Painting Studio. The classes run for six weeks and students can register for one or as many sessions as they want to during the summer. Different sessions will focus on perspective, contrast, tone, line, color mixing, brush techniques, and other painting skills.
A beautiful summer’s evening at the foot of the Dune Climb in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, hundreds of families enjoying their pre-concert picnics and then a musical program provided by artists of national stature: this is the magical mixture which has filled audiences with warm memories every year since the first Dune Climb concert in 1998.
The Manitou Music Festival concert series kicks off Tuesday, July 3 at7 p.m. with everyone’s perennial favorite patriotic tunes to be performed by the Northport Concert Band, the pride of Leelanau County. This free concert takes place on the lawn of the Glen Arbor Athletic Club at 6363 Western Avenue. Bring your friends and family, lawn chairs and blankets … and patriotic spirit. In the event of rain, the band will perform at the Glen Arbor Town Hall. Manitou Music Festival poster design winner, David Westerfield, will be Artist-in-Residence at the Glen Arbor Art Association for two weeks. His presentation to the public will be on Thursday, June 28 at 7:30 p.m. Westerfield lives in Glenview, Ill., where he has a graphic art business. He is a frequent visitor to Leelanau where he is captivated by the “visual beauty of the shore, dunes, and the many historic locations.”
The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) kicks off its 2012 array of art classes for adults and children on June 23. The programs this summer will again provide instruction for beginning to advanced levels in acrylic, oils, watercolors, pastels, and drawing. Many classes will focus on landscape art, reflecting the unique beauty of Leelanau County.
The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) will exhibit recent works donated by artists who have participated in the GAAA’s Artist in Residence program during the past two years at the Glen Lake Community Library at 10115 East Front Street in Empire. The paintings are on view in the library’s community room through September during library hours.
