Friends of Sleeping Bear host accessibility open house

Upcoming Event

Friends of Sleeping Bear, the nonprofit citizens’ group that maintains the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, will host a public open house on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 1-4 p.m at Glen Haven to showcase new accessibility features available in the National Lakeshore—including a beach wheelchair, an all-terrain wheelchair, and a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk on the Glen Haven beach.

Two, new 16” x 16” signs will be placed along the Heritage Trail in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, using a combination of texts and photographs “to explain what happened in August 2015,” said Leonard Marszalek, manager of the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes’ Heritage Trail.

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail ambassadors sought

Upcoming Event

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail ambassadors help visitors by answering questions, giving directions, and sometimes handing out coupons for Cherry Republic ice cream when they find trail users “Doing Something Right”. Ambassadors are also Friends of Sleeping Bear’s eyes and ears on the trail reporting maintenance or safety issues that need to be resolved.

Adopt-A-Beach Call for Volunteers

News

Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes will be hosting a kickoff meeting for Adopt-A-Beach volunteers on Saturday, May 21 at 1 p.m. in the DH Day Log Cabin at DH Day campground. Because of limited parking at the campground, consider parking at Glen Haven and walking to the Log Cabin along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. The cabin is about ¼ mile east of Glen Haven and right along the trail.

Park reopens Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, DH Day Campground on Sunday

The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is now open from Glen Haven to Glen Arbor, the National Park reports. The DH Day Campground will reopen on Sunday, Aug. 16. Both areas have been closed since a severe storm on Sunday, Aug. 2 caused downed power lines and extensive tree damage.

Within the next few weeks, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will officially open its third leg, which stretches roughly from the Crystal River dam (on County Road 675, 1.5 miles east of Glen Arbor) up to the Port Oneida Rural Historic District. That 3.4-mile stretch will make the popular Heritage Trail nearly 13 miles long.

Sleepy Bear Twilight Ride returns

Join Friends of Sleeping Bear for the second annual Sleepy Bear Twilight Ride on Sunday, Aug. 10. This family-friendly bike ride on the newly expanded Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail offers something for everyone. Choose to Beat the Bear for a challenging ride from the Dune Climb to Empire and back, or Chase the Cub for a relaxing, easy ride to Glen Arbor. Some ambitious hearty riders might decide to do both. Whatever you decide, there will be food and refreshments at the Dune Climb provided by Cherry Republic.
