Upcoming EventThe Glen Arbor Art Association Reader’s Theater presents two plays April 12-14. “The Circus Train,” from the Ellery Queen series, is an interactive detective tale featuring a giant, a midget, a fortuneteller and murder. Rounding out the evening is a sci-fi thriller from The Mysterious Traveler series, “The Ugliest Woman Alive,” where things are never as they seem.

Sequestration’s effect on Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
NewsEffective March 1, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was required by “sequestration” (a series of automatic, across-the-board permanent spending cuts) to reduce its annual budget by 5 percent. The park must absorb that cut in the remaining seven months of this fiscal year that ends September 30. The federal law imposing sequestration requires that each park take this cut.
Leelanau County turns 150 years old
Historical FeatureThis week, under little fanfare, Leelanau County celebrated it’s 150th birthday. That is, on Feb. 27, 1863, the Michigan State Legislature create the county of Leelanau with three townships — Centerville, Glen Arbor and Leelanau. The peninsula that looks like the mitten’s pinky finger had previously been part of Grand Traverse County (along with what is now Benzie County).

Sleeping Bear tourism creates $132 million for local economy
Investigative ArticleA new National Park Service report for 2011 shows that the 1,348,304 visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore spent $132,774,000 in communities surrounding the park. This spending supported 2,347 jobs in the local area. “Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a wonderful place to learn about America’s story,” said Park Superintendent Dusty Shultz. “We attract visitors from across the U.S. and around the world who come here to experience the park and then spend time and money enjoying the services provided by our neighboring communities.”
