Emilio Sánchez Vicario, founder of the Sanchez-Casal Academy, the top leading Tennis Academy in Europe and one of the most prestigious in the world, located in Barcelona, Spain and Naples, Florida, will host a tennis clinic in Glen Arbor on Saturday, August 9, beginning at 8:45 a.m. at the Glen Arbor Public Tennis Courts.

The League of Women Voters Leelanau County will host Monika Smiley and her presentation of her recent trip to Rwanda. “A Journey to Rwanda: Where Women Entrepreneurs Are Building Their Country and Making a Real Difference” will be held Tuesday, August 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Munnecke Room of the Leland Township Public Library. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

“Ignore my fingers. I work on an organic farm and was pruning tomato plants. It turns your fingers black.” Tyler Bradley holds up his hands to show his darkened fingers. “It’s hard to get off, but don’t worry, I washed my hands.” He’s in front of the crowd at the Hayloft Inn on a recent Thursday evening, getting ready to play a few songs on his guitar. But before Bradley starts to play and right after the black-finger explanation, he asks, “What time is it?”

Our default perspective is from our own place and time. This is natural. It cannot be otherwise. Yet it’s sometimes fun to engineer a shift in the way we see and experience things, and by so doing create more awareness. You can put on the 3-D glasses for another time period by trying out earlier modes of transportation. Some of these are a little hard to find but walking, our original mode of locomotion, is always available. Travel by canoe, ox-cart, stage coach, sleigh, schooner, steamer and train will take a little more effort in the way of arrangement-making, but all are still possible.

She didn’t want to become “the crazy cat lady collecting pets.” So Sue Nichols became a volunteer for AC Paw, a regional pet rescue. “There are too many (homeless) animals and it was making me crazy,” said Nichols, the owner of Riverfront Deli, 6281 W. River Road/ M-22 in Glen Arbor. “Just writing a check wasn’t enough anymore.”

Join Friends of Sleeping Bear for the second annual Sleepy Bear Twilight Ride on Sunday, Aug. 10. This family-friendly bike ride on the newly expanded Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail offers something for everyone. Choose to Beat the Bear for a challenging ride from the Dune Climb to Empire and back, or Chase the Cub for a relaxing, easy ride to Glen Arbor. Some ambitious hearty riders might decide to do both. Whatever you decide, there will be food and refreshments at the Dune Climb provided by Cherry Republic.

History comes alive at six historic sites during the annual Port Oneida Fair at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Friday and Saturday, August 8-9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the many popular demonstrations, animals and exhibits, the fair will feature a chicken dinner on Friday, and end with solar viewing and an astronomy party on Saturday night. This two-day special event is free. Participants need only purchase the Park Entrance Pass or have an Annual Pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun.

A crew of five young adults are restoring part of Leelanau County’s past, and on Aug. 8-9 they’ll show you how it’s done at the Port Oneida Fair. They are bringing new life to the old Goffar Barn, a 30-foot by 40-foot timber frame building in Glen Arbor Township. Located at the north end of Port Oneida/M-22 on Lake Narada, the 19th century barn is one of 366 historic structures located within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in varying states of repair.

Traverse City artist Joan Richmond explores “Edges: Water, Sky, Land,” a new series of paintings at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St. in Glen Arbor. The show opens Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. with a reception for the artist.
