Park holds Port Oneida Sampler instead of Fair
NewsSleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has canceled the Port Oneida Fair this year (it was also canceled in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Instead, the Park invites the public to a Port Oneida Sampler, which will be held on four consecutive Wednesday afternoons in August. On each day, one of the Port Oneida farms will open a barn or house for one-way traffic and tours and may have a demonstrator on site.
COVID on the rise: Leelanau posts largest single-day case count in nearly three months
NewsThe Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department reported five new cases of COVID-19 today, August 2, as the Delta variant spreads throughout the nation, particularly among unvaccinated populations. The last time Leelanau County reported more than five COVID-19 cases in a single day was May 4 (when eight cases were reported). That was nearly three months ago.
Voters asked to fund Glen Lake Library’s ongoing operations
NewsOn August 3, residents of Empire, Glen Arbor and Kasson Townships will be asked to consider a property tax assessment to fund ongoing operations of the Glen Lake Library, a treasured community resource which opened last September in a new building in Empire.

A big catch
NewsAyed Arafah caught this giant Lake Trout on July 22 a few miles off Esch Beach together with boat captain Rich Delor. Arafah, a wood-working craftsman who lives in the Palestinian West Bank, arrived in northern Michigan 48 hours before the fishing trip. This was his first time in a boat or holding a fishing pole. Arafah’s host, Timothy Young, observed his friend’s “sheer joy and excitement.” That night, they grilled the Lake Trout with wild leek butter and lemon.

Glen Arbor zoning vote could determine future of Mill project
NewsThe signs are seemingly everywhere around Glen Arbor this summer: the black and white “VOTE YES! Save The Mill” up against the red white and blue “Glen Arbor Zoning Proposal VOTE NO.” Here’s what at stake. During the primary election on Tuesday, August 3, Glen Arbor Township residents will vote to either approve, or overturn, the Township Board’s decision on February 16, by a 4-1 vote, to rezone the Brammer parcel next to the historic, 1870s era Kelderhouse-Brammer grist mill on the Crystal River from “residential” to “recreational.”
The Makings of the “Crown Jewel” of S. Fox Island
NewsThe South Fox Island Light Station is located 17 miles off the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula in northeastern Lake Michigan, and is a part of Leelanau County. The “crown jewel” of this historic complex is the light tower built in 1867. It rises some 39 feet above its base and some 69 feet above the lake level. It sat—for the most part—alone and forlorn since it was deactivated by the United Stated Coast Guard (USCG) in 1958.
Glen Lake star goalkeeper to play soccer in England this fall
NewsSoccer-crazed England narrowly missed “bringing it home” and winning its first Euro Cup since 1966—after losing on penalty kicks to Italy on July 11—but Britain will nab a star Glen Lake Laker to suit up and play in goal this fall. Becca Nowicki, the star keeper who graduated this spring from Glen Lake High School, will play soccer in England this coming fall. Nowicki was courted by Macclesfield FC International Academy, which is based in Preston, north of Manchester.
Run faster than the bear at July 27 Running Bear Run
NewsGlen Arbor’s popular annual Running Bear Run is back in 2021. Join the event on July 27 for a wonderful day with family and friends. Everyone is included from little ones to Grandma and Grandpa. There are nine age categories from 10 & under to 70 and up. You can run the 5K or take a more leisurely walk. The kids will have the “½ Mile Kids’ Run” to chase that bear. The Running Bear Run is back to charm the kids and to make great photo ops for all.
