Sleeping Bear Dunes announces barn workshop

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will conduct its annual barn restoration workshop from June 8-12, commencing daily at 9 a.m. The workshop will be held at the Lyle and Sarah Schmidt farm, located three miles south of Empire, off M-22 on Norconk Road, with signage provided along M-22 for guidance.

The primary focus of the workshop will be the repair of the horse barn at the Schmidt farm. This event offers opportunities for both families and individuals ranging from novice to experienced carpenters, with activities designed to engage all skill levels. There is no participation fee.

Participants are not required to possess specialized skills in the building trades; however, prior experience is welcomed and valued. The workshop aims to provide instruction in restoration techniques for timber and frame structures.

Attendees are advised to wear boots and gloves and bring a packed lunch each day. Registration is flexible, allowing participants to choose their preferred days of attendance.

On-site camping will be available at the Schmidt farm for registered participants, with amenities provided, including access to showers at park campgrounds.

For registration or further information, contact the Park Historical Architect, Kimberly Mann, at 231-326-4771 or via email at kimberly_mann@nps.gov.
