Port Oneida’s Treat Farm gets facelift
One of the most popular farmsteads in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is getting a major facelift. Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear (PHSB) is focusing their mainland project this summer on the Treat Farmhouse. PHSB will spend $5,000 to contract out scraping and priming the exterior of the house to be followed by two volunteer projects.
The first volunteer project will make significant repairs, including replacing rotted sills, by a group of skilled PHSB volunteers. Volunteers are needed for the second workshop on Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16 starting at 9 a.m. to paint the finish coats. There will also be other jobs including pruning orchards and removing encroaching vegetation around the house. In addition, they’ll be straightening a wall and finishing the exterior of the Pig Barn. Volunteers should wear long pants, close-toed shoes, and bring a lunch.
Last year, the organization worked on six outbuildings at the farm located just south of Empire. Take M-22, right on Stormer road, and then a ½ mile down a two-track into the farmstead. The Park has granted permission to allow a small number of vehicles during the project period. Volunteers may be shuttled up to the farm for minimal impact on the property.
