Paintings by Day at Glen Arbor Art Association

From staff reports

The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) continues its Summer Gallery shows with artist Mary Beth Day’s work. In this full gallery show, Mary Beth will present her newest landscape paintings. Featured will be scenes of the Leelanau area and other northern locations.

An artist reception will be held at the Glen Arbor Art Gallery on Friday, July 29, from 5-9 p.m. Wine and appetizers will be served. The show will continue on Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Last year Mary Beth spent two weeks in the GAAA Artist in Residence program, painting and taking hundreds of photographs she works from when not on site. “I love to spend time here during any season. It’s just beautiful; another painting awaits around every bend and over every hill.”

This June Mary Beth attended a GAAA workshop taught by nationally known artist Lou Heiser, who was also the first-prize winner of the 2010 Paint Out. “Lou encouraged me to expand my work from acrylic paints to oils. At first I wasn’t comfortable using them since they handle very differently from acrylics. However, since the workshop I’ve painted exclusively using oils. I really like the fluidity in the results of my work.” she said.

The image shows “Evening Dune”, one of the works in oil completed after the workshop. It is 11×14 painted on canvas board.
