Nature through Japanese woodblock printing

From staff reports

Linda Beeman looks “at nature through the eyes of mokuhanga”—an ancient form of Japanese woodblock printing. And what the artists sees will be on display Aug. 17-30 at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. An artist’s reception to open the exhibition is Friday, Aug. 17, from 6-8 p.m.

Beeman keeps mokuhanga alive and well in her studio practice, and adheres to the traditions that have carried through the centuries and make this an expressive approach to depicting the natural world. “Each print is the cumulative process of hand carving, hand painting and hand printing,” said Beeman, a resident of Owosso. “They are not copies.” Instead, each print Beeman makes is pulled by hand without any mechanical help.

Center Gallery is open daily from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information visit LakeStreetStudiosGlenArbor.com or call 231-334-3179.
