Message in a bottle
Kathleen Dodge Buhler and her husband were walking the wonderful shoreline of Lake Michigan around 9 p.m. on July 17, as she had done for the last 58 years, enjoying the pink sunset afterglow to the west as small waves lapped in. An aqua-colored wine bottle on the top of a wave lapping gently at the shore suddenly caught their attention. They looked closer and noticed that it was corked and had a message inside. Kathleen was tremendously excited for she had never before found anything like this on her many shoreline walks.
Wanting to honor the spirit of the bottle, she is waiting to open it — much to the chagrin of her friends, many of whom speculated as to where it may have come from. Off a boat? From distant shores? From someone in need of help?
Kathleen decided instead to share the unveiling of the note in the bottle. She and friends plan to meet at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 30, at the same spot on the beach where the bottle was found to open it and read the message inside. All are welcome to join the uncovering of this mystery and the reading of the message at the public beach at the end of Bay Lane just north of Glen Arbor.
