Leelanau votes Biden for President, James for Senate, nearly flips County Commission

The votes are in, and Leelanau County citizens supported Democrat Joe Biden for President over Donald Trump, by a count of 8,793-7,915. Michigan’s statewide results are incomplete, as mail-in ballots continue to be counted. Results may not be unveiled until Thursday or Friday, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has stated. Michigan and other Midwestern rustbelt states may once again decide the presidential election.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. Senate race, Leelanau voters narrowly favored Republican challenger John James over Democratic incumbent Gary Peters, 8,379-8,275. For U.S. Congress, Republican incumbent Jack Bergman beat Democratic challenger Dana Ferguson, 8,709-7,842 in Leelanau. For the State Legislature race, Republican incumbent Jack O’Malley beat Democratic challenger Beth McGill-Rizer, 8,928-7,730 in Leelanau

Democrats almost took control of Leelanau’s 7-seat County Commission in Tuesday’s election, but came up 2 votes short in District 1, where Republican Rick Robbins received 1,183 votes to 1,181 for Democrat George Bowers. Both were battling to succeed current commissioner Tony Ansorge. Republicans will maintain their 4-3 advantage on the Commission. Those are unofficial results, according to County Clerk Michelle Crocker, who said that the Board of Canvassers will canvass all results starting Thursday at 9 a.m.

County Commission District 2 Republican incumbent Deb Rushton beat Democratic challenger John Hunter, 1,316-1,031.

County Commission District 3 Republican incumbent William Bunek beat Democratic challenger Lois Bahle, 1,230-1,144.

County Commission District 4 Democrat Ty Wessel ran unopposed.

County Commission District 5 Democratic incumbent Patricia Soutas-Little beat Republican challenger Jim Houdek, 1,383-1,109.

In County Commission District 6, Democrat Gwenne Allgaier beat Republican Lana Schaub, 1,425-1,070

County Commission District 7 Republican incumbent Melinda Lautner beat Democratic challenger Julie Morris, 1,243-944

In the race for Glen Arbor Township Supervisor, Republican Tom Laureto beat independent Bob Hawley, 388-256.

In the race for Leland Township Supervisor, incumbent Democrat Susan Och beat Republican challenger Randy Ralph, 874-720.

In the County Clerk race, incumbent Michelle Crocker beat Theresa Rose, 9,908-6,346.
