Leelanau State Park, Lighthouse hold Rock the Light races, community day

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum and Friends of Leelanau State Park are excited to announce the return of the Rock the Light Races: 5K Run/Walk Pirate Dash and the Capt. Woolsey 10-Miler, taking place in beautiful Leelanau State Park on Saturday, June 6. Participants of all ages and skill levels are invited to enjoy a unique race experience surrounded by the natural beauty and historic charm of northern Michigan.

The event features two race options: 5K Run/Walk Pirate Dash—perfect for families, walkers, and casual runners; Capt. Woolsey 10-Miler—a challenging and scenic course for experienced runners.

Both races will begin and end near the historic Grand Traverse Lighthouse, offering participants breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, wooded trails, and the Leelanau Peninsula shoreline. Proceeds from the event will help support the Leelanau State Park projects and Programming.

“This event is a wonderful way to combine fitness, community spirit, and local history,” said Stef Staley, executive director. “We are excited to welcome runners, walkers, families, and visitors to experience one of Michigan’s most beautiful destinations while supporting lighthouse preservation.”

Participants are encouraged to register early. Race-day activities will include refreshments, awards, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to explore the lighthouse and museum grounds.  Also, included is a free pancake breakfast for all participants.

For registration information, sponsorship opportunities, or volunteer details, please contact the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum by email at info@grandtraverselighthouse.com or online at GrandTraverseLighthouse.com.

Grand Traverse Lighthouse hosts Community Day on June 13

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum invites the community to celebrate history, discovery, and family fun during its annual Community Day on Saturday, June 13, from 10 am to 5 pm at the historic Grand Traverse Lighthouse located inside Leelanau State Park.

This special event offers free admission into both Leelanau State Park and the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum for the day, giving visitors the opportunity to explore one of Michigan’s most treasured historic landmarks.

Community Day will feature activities and attractions for all ages, including: climb the lighthouse tower; drive an Underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle); arts & crafts vendors; shipwreck exhibit, and treasure hunt activities.

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is listed on both the State and National Register of Historic Places and is operated by a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring this important historic site for future generations.

“We are excited to welcome visitors from near and far to experience everything the lighthouse has to offer,” said representatives from the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum. “Community Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate local history, support local vendors, and enjoy a fun-filled day at Leelanau State Park.”

Arts and crafts vendors will also be on site throughout the event, showcasing handmade items and local creations.

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula inside Leelanau State Park near Northport, Michigan.

For more information about Community Day or vendor opportunities, please contact the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum at 231-386-7195 or email info@grandtraverselighthouse.com.

Established in 1852, the Grand Traverse Lighthouse has guided mariners entering the Manitou Passage for more than 170 years. Today, the lighthouse serves as a museum and educational destination dedicated to preserving the maritime history of the Great Lakes region.
