Leelanau Second Healthiest County in Michigan
The Leelanau Enterprise — the county’s paper of record — published a story in last week’s edition titled “Healthy Leelanau” which highlights Glen Arborite Mark Cundiff, who teamed with his wife Jennifer to establish Enhanced Physical Therapy at the Glen Arbor Athletic Club in 2004. (See our story about Mark and Jennifer here.)
The story reports that Leelanau County ranks second in the state in health, according to a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute. The study is based on healthy outcomes — a measure of length and quality of life — and health factors, which measures health behaviors, access to and quality of clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment. The Enterprise quoted Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department officer William Crawford as saying, “It’s quite interesting. When you look at the top counties in the state, they all have higher social and economic conditions. The counties that struggle in those categories, tend to be on the lower end of the social/economic scale.”
Nevertheless, 31 percent of adults in Leelanau are considered obese.
