Leelanau Conservancy offers Labor Day weekend events

Late Summer Hike at DeYoung Natural Area

Enjoy a pre-Labor Day hike with docent Dave Amos on August 31 at 10 am over fields, forest, and hills on the DeYoung farm’s uplands trail. We will look for migratory birds on the property plus wild fruit and vegetation at its most lush. Please park in the lot on Strang Road, which is about a quarter mile north of the barn. Hike will be easy to moderate and last 1.5-2 hours.

Cedar River Sunset Paddle

Relax and unwind this Labor Day weekend with a calm sunset paddle down the Cedar River, one of the wildest places in Leelanau. The paddle is Sunday, Sept. 1 at 7 pm. Our docents will guide you as we paddle downstream from the Cedar boat launch where the river crosses under Kasson St. (Rte. 651) returning shortly after sunset. The total time on the river will be about 2.5 hours, and there is no place to disembark along the way. We should see sunset from the river, which can be beautiful with the reflections on the water and silhouetted trees. Participants must bring their own kayak or canoe (SUP not recommended) and a PFD for each person in the boat. Mosquito repellent is highly recommended, as are binoculars and a camera (with a dry bag, please). Registration is required because this event is limited to 20 boats.

Sunset Yoga at Van’s Beach in Leland

Join us for the last Leelanau Conservancy summer yoga class of the season with yoga instructor Katherine Palms. Each class is donation-based with Katherine generously donating all proceeds to the Conservancy. The class is Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 pm.

These classes will be a slow flow practice modified for outdoor purposes. Our focus is on integrating breath and movement through Sun Salutations, balancing, and core work. All levels welcome.

Katherine is certified through yoga alliance from her 200-hour training in 2013. Since then she has continued education with a 10-day immersion trip to study yoga in India in 2014, a 12-Step to Recovery training in 2015, along with Holy Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Inversion Training, and other workshops in the past two years. Katherine is a substitute yoga and barre teacher at Yen Yoga and Fitness, and Center Ice Fitness. This summer she will be teaching at Yoga4 in Lake Leelanau, French Valley Vineyard in Sutton’s Bay, and at Sleeping Bear Fitness in Glen Arbor. Follow and stay updated on classes with her on Instagram @M22_YogaGirl.
