Leelanau Christian Neighbors purchase home to address County’s affordable rental housing crisis

News

From staff reports

Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN) has announced the recent purchase of a house located at the corner of M-204 and Co Rd-641 in Lake Leelanau — a strategic acquisition aimed at mitigating the affordable housing and rental crisis in Leelanau County. This initiative was made possible through LCN’s Affordable Housing Fund, underscoring the organization’s commitment to aiding those with inadequate resources the opportunity to live and thrive in the community.

“This purchase is a significant step in our efforts to serve Leelanau County residents and keep affordable housing in the county so young people can afford to live here,” said Mary Stanton, LCN executive director. “Our partnership with HomeStretch Nonprofit Housing Corporation is crucial in managing this property effectively, safeguarding it as an affordable option.”

The property, formerly owned by the Zip Flees Trust, will be managed by HomeStretch Nonprofit Housing Corporation from Traverse City. HomeStretch, known for its dedication to providing affordable housing solutions, will oversee the property’s management, ensuring it is rented at a modest cost to support the community’s needs.

“We are thrilled to partner with Leelanau Christian Neighbors on this important project,” said Jon Stimson, HomeStretch executive director. “Together, we can provide much-needed affordable housing in Leelanau County, ensuring that more families and young people have access to safe and affordable homes.”

Leelanau Christian Neighbors is a nonprofit organization that serves Leelanau County by providing essential services to individuals and families in need. LCN’s programs include food and baby pantries, Blessings in a Backpack, financial assistance, the thrift store Samaritans’ Closet, and the recently established Affordable Housing Fund. Through these initiatives, LCN strives to create a supportive and inclusive community where all residents have access to the resources necessary for a better quality of life.

HomeStretch Nonprofit Housing Corporation is dedicated to developing, providing, and maintaining affordable housing for individuals and families in Northwest Michigan. HomeStretch collaborates with local organizations and communities to create housing opportunities that are safe, sustainable, and within reach for those with low to moderate incomes. By managing properties like the one acquired by LCN, HomeStretch ensures that affordable housing remains a viable option for many.

This collaboration between LCN and HomeStretch marks a significant milestone in addressing the affordable housing shortage in Leelanau County. Both organizations remain committed to their missions of supporting community members and fostering environments where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
