Health Department reports 70 percent vaccinated, age 12 and up
From staff reports
As of Friday, July 9, the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department reports that 70.4% of residents 12 and older who are eligible in the health department’s two-county jurisdiction have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. While that’s great news, there are still age groups and areas that are lagging behind.
“There are still many individuals who have questions or are uncertain about COVID-19 vaccination,” said health officer Lisa Peacock. “I encourage anyone who has questions to speak with their primary care provider, or visit a reputable website such as the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), the state of Michigan or our health department website. We’re here for you to give you the facts to make your decision,” she added.
To get out the most up-to-date information, the State of Michigan is hosting a series of virtual town halls about the COVID-19 vaccine through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ Facebook page. Once on the page, scroll down to the video section to view the virtual town hall meetings. Individuals will hear about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine and will be able to get answers to common questions.
A recent town hall addressed information for parents and families. On July 22, the focus will be vaccination of young adults. Each session includes local information and facts about COVID-19 and the vaccines presented by relevant experts, such as physicians. Check them out, as they are a great way to get your questions answered. View past recordings and see a calendar of new topics on the Health Department’s website.
Health department officials also want to remind students and families that children age 12 and older, those eligible for the Pfizer vaccine, who get a first dose by August 3 will be fully vaccinated before school starts. Those who receive both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have the most protection against the virus. Fully vaccinated students can return to school safer this fall! Students are welcome at any of our clinics and have the option of scheduling an appointment ahead of time or simply walking in! Parent consent is required. If parents have questions or are not able to find a time or date that works for them can call 231-256-0200 or email covidvaccine@bldhd.org for more information.
