Glen Lake Library hosts Wheeler reading “Angel of the Garbage Dump”

,

From staff reports

Local author and Glen Arbor Sun editor and publisher Jacob Wheeler will share his new book Angel of the Garbage Dump (Mission Point Press) on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 pm at the Glen Lake Community Library in Empire.

This moving profile documents the work of Hanley Denning, a young woman from Maine who dedicated her life to humanitarian projects in Guatemala. Through her tireless efforts, Denning launched a school called Safe Passage (“Camino Seguro” in Spanish) and helped thousands of children escape desperate poverty in the Guatemala City garbage dump. Even after her tragic death, Denning’s work continues to change the fortunes of some of our hemisphere’s most vulnerable citizens.

Wheeler will hold this event at the Glen Lake Library after several readings in Guatemala and Maine. Copies of Angel of the Garbage Dump will be available for sale, thanks to the Cottage Book Shop.

Praise for Angel of the Garbage Dump

“Hanley Denning’s story is filled with practical magic, brought to warm, vivid life by Jacob Wheeler’s reporting and storytelling. It’s a handbook, too, filled with dramatic triumphs and hurdles, on how to be a neighbor, a maker, a parent, an engaged citizen, no matter your home. In this book are simple but critical lessons about living; there is much we can learn from Wheeler’s telling of the story. This book needs to be on every library shelf and in every city hall in America.”

— Doug Stanton, New York Times bestselling author

“Gorgeously written, Jacob Wheeler’s compelling tale of the power of one is required reading for anyone who feels the call to serve humanity. It is an account of how selfless love, lived presence and trust earned mobilized a community and created diamonds of hope from the ashes of despair. It begs us to ask, what we, too, can do?”

— Carrie Hessler-Radelet, NGO leader and Former Peace Corps Director
