Glen Arbor Women’s Club meeting features forager, author Lisa Rose
From staff reports
“My goal is to get a lot of people thinking differently about the “connections among nature, what we eat and what we are.” — Lisa M. Rose, author, wild food activist and educator, who lives in Grand Rapids.
Rose’s newly released book, Midwest Foraging; 115 Wild and Flavorful Edibles from Burdock to Wild Peach (Timber Press), endeavors to make foraging accessible to everyone — from beginners seeking reliable advice to experienced foragers on the hunt for new flavors — with photographs that help in identification and seasonal lists of when and where to safely and sustainably harvest. Rose will be the featured speaker at the Tuesday, Sept. 8, Glen Arbor Women’s Club meeting, 7 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Township Hall.
During a recent book signing at the Cottage Book Shop in Glen Arbor, following the August 2 megastorm , Rose, asked her listeners to consider “how the land might heal itself going forward after such a devastating storm. We talked about the acorns that were shaken from the trees. The acorns are not only the rebirth of a new growth of oaks, but also a complete and complex carbohydrate, filled with plant proteins and healthy fats. We will have a good year for acorns this fall — a wild food from the land that can nourish and sustain us.”
In a August 11 blog posting Rose shared…”The land – with all her natural systems of regeneration – will fill in the cracks…native and “invasive” plants that will fill in now where the disturbed soil is exposed, revealing the seeds in the soil’s seed bank to the sun and water.
While we are still in the midst of cleanup, it will be interesting to watch and observe nature’s approach to the restoration work. And perhaps of all the tools that are helping the community get back on its feet, our ability to watch and listen will carry us through this long haul of renewal.
The land will heal itself, and despite the brutal force of its storms, it will also offer us the resources we need to move forward. “
