Glen Arbor Sun wins 12 awards in Michigan Press Association’s “Better Newspaper Contest”

The Glen Arbor Sun won 12 awards in the Michigan Press Association’s 2021 Better Newspaper Contest in the class of Michigan News Media (which does not include daily print newspapers).

Members of the Arkansas Press Association reviewed 186 entries submitted by 9 Michigan News Media members this year. Submitted stories were published between August 1, 2020, and July 31, 2021.

In the category, “Best Opinion: News Media-Local,” the Sun ran the table, winning first, second and third places. Norm Wheeler’s “From Republican to hippie: my evolution, a party’s evolution” won first place; Jacob Wheeler’s “Protect American democracy. Restore our values. Fire Trump” won second place; and Norm Wheeler’s “Reconciling with racism: a baseball story, a Henry Aaron memory” won third place.

In the category, “Business/Agricultural News: News Media-Local,” the Sun won second and third place. Madeleine Vedel’s “Cherry farmers find creative solutions during challenging season” won second place; Jacob Wheeler’s “Immigrant farmworkers meet the Commander in Chief” won third place.

In the category, “Feature Story: News Media-Local,” the Sun won second place and honorable mention. Linda Dewey’s “Glen Arbor daughter strives to bring home airmen MIA from World War II” won second place; Jacob Wheeler’s “Meet the public health workers protecting us from COVID-19” won honorable mention.

In the category, “Government/Education News: News Media-Local,” the Sun won second place for Jacob Wheeler’s “County’s digital divide hurts students’ ability to learn online during Coronavirus pandemic.”

In the category, “News Enterprise Reporting: News Media-Local,” the Sun won second place, third place, and honorable mention. Josephine Arrowood’s “Grist mill zoning spat confounds Glen Arbor Township” won second place; Jacob Wheeler’s “Private beach wall could dramatically change Empire shoreline” won third place; Jacob Wheeler’s “If she hadn’t been in the car, she would be alive today — COVID-19 claims 30-year-old Native American” won honorable mention.

In the category, “Spot News Story: News Media-Local,” the Sun won third place for Jacob Wheeler’s “A stargazing good samaritan tourist sounds the alarm on Le Bear fire.”
