Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates wood
From staff reports
Celebrate wood—the material, the place, the state of mind—at the opening reception for “Wood, Woods, Wooden,” the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s (GAAC) second exhibition of 2019, on Friday, March 8, from 6-8 p.m. in the GAAC gallery, located at 6031 S. Lake St. in Glen Arbor.
Wood is a building material. The woods are where trees grow. Wooden is an attitude, a frame of mind. The GAAC’s exhibition brings the work of 29 artists who explore these themes, whether directly or abstractly. “Wood, Woods, Wooden” continues until April 11.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the GAAC offers additional programing and related workshops:
Windsor Furniture: Back Door Boot Bench
Learn the secrets of drilling compound angles, and mortice and tenon joinery to make an heirloom back door bench on Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Studio woodworker David Abeel shows adult students how to use a variety of hand tools to create a classic Windsor bench. Registration required.
Gallery Talk
Nearly four years after an historic wind storm devastated great swaths of Leelanau County woodlands, the Glen Arbor Arts Center takes a look at how the woods are doing these days with Julia Gehring, a biologist with the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on Thursday, March 28, at 10:30 am. Free.
Wood Assemblage
Studio artist Jesse Hickman leads an introductory class in constructing a 2D or 3D wood assemblage on Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Registration required.
