Friends of Sleeping Bear seeks Trail Ambassadors

From staff reports

Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes and Sleeping Bear Dunes National will host a kickoff meeting for Trail Ambassador volunteers on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Saturday, June 7 at 1 p.m. in the DH Day Log Cabin in DH Day Campground. Please park at Glen Haven and ride your bike or walk the trail to the cabin.

If you are looking for a way to help keep the trail beautiful and meet a lot of nice people, while enjoying a relaxing walk or bike ride, you’ll want to learn more about the Trail Ambassador program. Many of our volunteers are families or groups of friends who enjoy biking or walking the trail together. It’s simple, easy, and fun.

Trail Ambassador volunteers commit to being on the trail at least twice each month during the spring, summer and fall, but most of our volunteers are on the trail several times a week. Ambassadors are a resource for our visitors by being available to answer questions and give directions. They also report problems with the trail like erosion or down trees to the Trail Crew, a group of Trail Ambassadors who do maintenance work on the trail and groom it for skiing in the winter. Visitors have told us that they like having our Trail Ambassadors on the trail. It adds a sense of safety and friendliness that other trails don’t have.

With the trail becoming longer—extending all the way from Glen Arbor to Empire—we need more Trail Ambassadors! If you are interested in becoming a Trail Ambassador or member of the Trail Crew, please come to the Training Meeting on Saturday, June 7 at 1 p.m. at the DH Day Log Cabin.

Kerry Kelly from the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes and Park Rangers from the National Lakeshore will discuss the program and volunteer duties. Volunteers receive an annual pass to the National Lakeshore.
